Pizza Passion. Stewart prepares one of his ‘homemade’ style pizzas
It’s 25 years since Mr Munch, Camborne’s first pizza take away shop, opened for business in Trelowarren St.
Things have definitely changed since those early days, including ownership of the business and the quality of the pizzas on sale.
The newest owners took over in January this year. In true Italian style, the shop is a family concern owned by three brothers, Stewart, Gavin and Gareth Hood. They’re local lads who grew up in Illogan and went to Pool school.
Stewart handles the management of the shop. When it originally opened he was a student playing rugby for Camborne. Twenty five years on he’s passionate about creating the perfect pizza with an authentic, homemade taste.
Stewart makes his own pizza bases using a combination of ordinary flour and organic Einkorn flour. Einkorn is the purist form of wheat renowned for having a superior flavour and for being more digestible. Stewart also makes his own tomato sauce using Italian tomatoes and a combination of herbs and seasonings based on a recipe from an award-winning baker friend.
He also wants to support other local businesses and buys his ingredients and other necessary products from Camborne high street shops – Five a Day greengrocers, Maunders the Butchers, Jim’s and Betty’s for cleaning products and even getting his menus and leaflets made at Q-Print. He’s now investigating local dairies with a view to introducing ice cream to the Mr Munch menu.
“Business has been booming since we took over,” said Stewart. “I’ve had to take on extra staff and increase opening hours to meet demand. Even better than that is the feedback. So many people have complimented the flavour of the pizzas and said how much better and cheaper they are than chain store products.”
To mark Mr Munch’s 25th birthday, Stewart will have a weekend of selling pizzas at 90s’ prices, created with 21st century appeal and flavour.
After the celebration he has some exciting new additions planned for the menu – themed boxes. They will be served inside a pizza box separated into sections and will include a selection of tasty treats. The Mexican box, for example, will include a classic chilli complemented with a pot of guacamole and a portion of tortilla chips.
“Stewart’s passion for his product is clearly winning people’s custom and drawing more people into town,” said Project Manager for BID Camborne, Mel Martin. “On top of that success, he’s supporting other local businesses, which is fantastic. So congratulations on the first 25 years Mr Munch and many happy returns!”
