Traditionally held on the last Saturday of April, this year Trevithick Day will be taking place on Saturday 27th.
The festival was originally started in 1984 and has grown to become a highlight of the Cornish calendar, often attracting around 25,000 to 30,000 visitors to the town.
So what’s it all about?
Celebrating the engineering and mining history of the Camborne area, this fun and free community street festival is dedicated to Richard Trevithick – the pioneer of high-pressure steam power and inventor of road and railway locomotives.
Packed full of fun things to see and do, visitors will enjoy browsing the many vehicle displays and stalls lining the streets, whilst roaming performers keep everyone well entertained. The town’s shops will be welcoming customers, with many of them participating in the Trevithick Day Window Display Competition – why not take a look and decide which is your favourite?
Music of all tastes can be found at the different stages too, whilst at the town’s central car park you’ll find a fairground – the perfect place to keep the kids happy. Indoors there will be a flower festival, as well as an array of other exhibitions and events to explore.
Highlights of the day include the children’s ‘Bal-Maidens and Miners Dance’ which will take place in the morning and the adults’ ‘Trevithick’s Dance’ which will be performed in the afternoon.
The Steam Parade will top off the celebrations. Possibly the largest variety of steam engines in the world to proceed through an urban environment, you won’t want to miss it!
For those travelling to Camborne to join the fun, it is important to note that the main streets of the town will be closed to traffic during the day’s proceedings. A park and ride facility will be available which will be sign posted from the A30. Camborne also enjoys excellent public transport links, making it easy to travel by bus or train.
