It’s not often that you can say that a town has changed the world, but Camborne can – and more than once.
A town proud of its mining origins and industrial heritage with Holman Brothers, Richard Trevithick and the Bassett family playing a big part of the town’s history.
And the town is also proud of its business community. With over one hundred and forty independent shops and businesses which offer a range of goods and services, some of these are long-standing having been in the town for over fifty years.
One such business is Roy Doble Jewellers. Roy Doble trained as a watch and clock maker and opened his first shop in 1962 at 19 Cross Street. After several years, the business moved to bigger premises at 36 Commercial Street and 19 Cross Street was turned into a toy shop called the Toy Chest which was run by Mrs Doble.
A second shop opened in 1972 in Helston, with a third opening in Redruth in the eighties. The business was and still is family run with Roy’s son Robin, joining the team in 1974 at the Helston shop after studying jewellery design at Plymouth College of Art and Design. Robin’s brother Max, then joined the team in 1992. It was during this time that the business moved to their current premises at 38 Trelowarren Street. The shop in Redruth closed in 2009 due to Roy Doble retiring but the other two shops in Camborne and Helston are still open and run by both Max and Robin with Roy Doble Jewellers being very much part of the community.
One of the oldest businesses in town is Walters and Barbary, who specialise in business property and business and family law. They were established in 1890 by Alfred Walters in Basset Road and their offices are still located in the same street to this day.
R Pascoe & Sons is a fourth-generation family run business established in 1947 after Richard Pascoe returned from the 2nd world war. It was originally based at Palma House in College Street with Richard’s two sons also joining him sometime later.
They moved to 121 Trelowarren Street in 1984 and they are still based there today. R Pascoe & Sons are Cornwall’s largest retail memorial masons supplying the county and the UK.
